Self‑aggrandizement means acting or speaking in ways intended to make oneself appear more powerful, important, or influential, often in a boastful or self‑serving manner.
It refers to actions or statements intended to enhance one’s power, reputation, or status, frequently in a way that exaggerates the truth or disregards reality (Merriam-Webster).
It can manifest in speech, writing, or behavior, such as boasting about achievements, inflating one’s role in events, or seeking recognition beyond what is warranted (Cambridge Dictionary) Cambridge University Press & Assessment.
"Historical examples include rulers building monumental structures to glorify themselves or individuals constantly presenting embellished (false) personal stories to impress others."
Exaggerating the truth, disregarding reality, and embellishing stories, books, and conversations is, at its core, telling lies.
The Bible has much to say about telling lies, slander, and the damage they can do to people's lives and reputations.
Much depends on telling the truth. The police, courts, and government for example, may make terribly unjust rulings and decisions if they believed someone telling them lies. Some current examples could be climate lies, race lies, gender lies and the damage these lies are doing to societies and economies and families.
History, and passing on historical information, depends on people telling the truth. Family trees and family history depend on people telling the truth. Exaggerating, embellishing, and telling lies about historical events can be quite ruinous in many ways. It may elevate the storyteller in the eyes of the listener, but if it is untrue, it may also slander and cause harm to someone else's reputation. It may cause the listener to make decisions which are damaging for themselves and their families.
Obsessive exaggeration, embellishing, or lying, has a very negative impact on a person. It causes mental confusion and may lead to the person being unable to recognize what is actually true. They may start to believe the stories they are embellishing.
The Ninth Commandment is “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour,” found in Exodus 20:16 and repeated in Deuteronomy 5:20.
The commandment originally addressed perjury in legal settings, where false testimony could lead to wrongful punishment or death. In ancient Israel, witness testimony was the primary form of evidence, making truthfulness essential for justice. (Biblesundays.com)
Truthfulness, accuracy is speech and word, is also essential in most other settings. But most of all in relating to God, and the area of eternal salvation. Coming to understand our sinful state and being able to acknowledge our desperate need for Jesus to save us from this state and being able to repent of our sins and turn to Jesus and call out to Him for salvation, requires truthfulness.
Thankfully, nothing can stop Jesus from saving His people. He can break through even the biggest liar on the planet.
"Self-aggrandizement is at the foundation of so much of the misery of the world. It is the reason the powerful and the rich are indifferent to the plight of the poor. It is the reason for most of the violence, crime, and warfare in the world. It is at the heart of most cases of family disintegration.” Timothy Keller
