our purpose

Orbus' purpose is to establish and support projects which help people in need. The scope of our projects is dependent upon funds and resources donated.

The Orbus Center in Ngumbe, Malawi, Africa, includes a kindergarten class and a full primary school (Std 1 to 8) mostly for orphans and vulnerable children (OVC), a secondary school (Form 1, 2 and 3 as of September 2019), a Boarding facility for Secondary, plus a small scale farming project on its twenty acre property. Orbus are educating approximately 400 children, and in the process helping to support 21 Malawian teachers and staff and their families. There is a community of teachers, students and security living on-site and a weekly community church service every Sunday.

The Orbus Centre was officially opened in July 2010 and is now held in trust by the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian - (CCAP) Blantyre Synod, in partnership with the Presbyterian Church of Victoria (Australia), to be used for the purpose of caring for orphans and vulnerable children. Having established the project Orbus Australia's ongoing role is to manage the Australian side, funding a portion of teacher's and staff salaries, organizing volunteer visits and assisting with the further development of the project or with new projects as resources allow.

The Orbus Pre-School was opened at the Orbus Centre on 6th September 2010 (see a report on this) and then the Orbus Junior Primary School was officially started in September 2011 with a single Grade 1 class. As at September 2019 there are classes for Grades 1 through to 8, with the Std 8 class starting on 18th September 2017. The CCAP Orbus Mission Secondary School was started on 25th September 2017 with a Form 1 class, followed by the addition of a Form 2 class in September 2018 and Form 3 in September 2019.

Wells/pumps for fresh water in villages with no, or inadequate, access to fresh, clean water. Orbus Australia has had the privilege of initiating, being involved with and completing 4 wells/pumps in needy areas. One of the most practical ways of helping a needy village/area is to dig a simple well and put in a pump. There are plenty of needy areas around the Orbus Centre and the prices we have been able to obtain have very much been local rather than prices aimed at foreign donors. This is viewed as important given that the funds can go much further and can provide more fresh water. Funds aimed particularly at this area can be donated and an email sent to us to stipulate this specific area for the funds to be directed toward.

Houses for orphan families. Orbus Australia have been able to build some small houses for child-headed and grandmother headed orphan families in Malawi.

South-East Asia 2020. In 2020 Orbus are helping to faciliate the establishment of a new project, with a similar focus to that in Malawi, in a country in South-East Asia. For reasons of security the details of this project will only be shared with close supporters of Orbus.

We hope to maintain these existing projects, and to be used by God to establish new projects in areas of need, either in Australia or overseas. By initiating such projects our aim is to help individuals and communities to reverse the cycles and consequences of poverty and hopelessness.
